Verizon BB Curve 8530 or Tour 9630

I would like to get some advice from BB users on Verizon. These 2 appear to be the best choices of BB on the Verizon network. Which one do you prefer? The 9630 would cost me $50 whereas the 8530 would be free. The company I work for will not pay for my phone or my monthly service fees, so I am doing my best to make an informed decision. Right now, Verizon is offering a buy one get one free offer. Therefore, I would get one for my wife.

I would like to get some cool apps for it. I connect to a work email through the BES and also would like to set up my comcast account. In summary, 2 mail accounts, one personal - one work. Additionally, has anyone tried to maintain their fantasy teams on cbs sportsline? With summer coming, I would like to make changes to my team while I'm out on the road.

Thanks for all the advice!

Blackberry Bold Vs Blackberry Storm

Well I think most Blackberry users love this two models as it's more popular one ( I prefer Tour ). I have made small comparison between Blackberry Bold Vs Blackberry Storm as many person might want know the difference between this two. I used both before I switch to Tour.

Blackberry Vs iPhone...

I've had discussions with people over Blackberry's and iPhone's.

People have different opinions... and many rather the iPhone... and many rather Blackberry.

What would you say is the better phone with the better facilities?

Which should I get? G1 or BlackBerry Curve 8520

I have until tomorrow to decide

I know I'll most likely get a lot of fanboyism seeing as I am posting this on a BlackBerry related site but if you can just try and put that aside and let me know which phone you think I should get.

Here's the deal, My mother is buying a new phone and from what I understand the people at T-Mobile told her if she buys a smartphone she can get another one free. So if all that works out I'll be getting a G1 or possibly her old BlackBerry Curve 8520.

I don't know much about both phones I've only played around with the BlackBerry Curve a few times and it seems okay not too bad though I must admit I do like touch screens after owning an ipod touch, and an env touch.

If someone could go into a bit of detail on the following below that'd be great, though if anyone doesn't want to take the time out to help a newb I'd understand why. Thanks for anybody's input.

What I'm looking for in a phone:

Texting
Web Browsing
E-Mail (I use GMail)
Light Gaming (Something small quick to pass the time while I travel on a bus or train nothing major)
Apps (Preferrably free user friendly apps)
Battery Life

samsung captivate vs BB 9700

I have the option to move to the Samsung Captivate from a Bold 9700 -- the Bold has been giving me issues, so I'm doing a warranty exchange and device swap.

Any opinions? Only thing keeping me on RIM is BBM. Otherwise I'm kinda intrigued by Android.

Thanks!

Blackberry or Iphone

Hello, I'd like to buy a powerfull and nice smartphone for working and fun. I like very much Blackberry but I think an Iphone 4 is better and nicer. What are your opinions and experiences? What do you recomended me?
Thanks a lot.

Will Windows Phone 7 end BlackBerry's enterprise dominance?

Microsoft hasn't really jumped back into the smartphone game just yet (they technically never left, but Windows Mobile 6.5 seems ancient by now), and one writer seems to be betting that RIM has something to worry about.

Reggie Middleton, writing for Business Insider, believes that RIM is now a short play after seeing Windows Phone 7. He says, "I believe RIM is coming up short in the consumer space, and is losing technological advantage in the enterprise space."

Is he right? Well maybe, but it's not that easy. First of all Microsoft has missed an entire cycle in the smartphone world so they have some catching up to do. Those companies who already have a large stable of BlackBerry users are not just going to switch over. In an effort to go after Apple and Google Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 offering seems much more consumer driven so it's doubtful it will be competitive in the enterprise space. Microsoft will surely develop more in the enterprise space but that will take another year or two.

Mr. Middleton argues that Microsoft's smartphones will be extensions of Exchange/Sharepoint/Windows/Office servers and that's true. But, other companies including RIM can interact with Exchange so it may not be compelling enough to switch to a Microsoft handset right away.

As time goes on I think Microsoft will start taking their share of the market and five years from now they could be in the lead, but it's just way too early to tell.

Let's check back next spring and see what kind of momentum Microsoft has with Windows Phone 7. We'll have a better feel for things then.

New forum for 'Phoneswitchers'.

If you are considering changing from a Blackberry to another type of smartphone or are perhaps thinking of changing from an iPhone to a Blackberry for instance or a Treo to a Blackberry my new forum might be able to help.

Each time I changed smartphones, most recently from a Blackberry to an Android G1, I would visit some forums for the phone I was switching to, and ask questions about it and hopefully get answers to how it differs to the phone I presently have.

Now there likes the problem! You see if you visit an Android forum, a Blackberry forum etc you will find it is very biased towards that particular platform. So when you start asking questions like:

?How does the calendar layout on the iPhone differ to the layout on the Blackberry I have now??

You might get a few sensible answers but you will likely also attract some of the forum trolls and end up in a small flame war of your own. This has happened to me on several occasions.

So the idea behind my forum is you can hopefully get impartial advice from people who have already made the particular ?phoneswitch? you are considering, or who are also considering switching and may be able to help with your questions.

I?ll also be hanging out there and will help wherever I can!

The forum is called ?Phone Switchers? and can be found here, Phone Switchers Forum • Index page, please give it a try.

It's early days yet but hopefully it should start receiving some more posts soon!

Button Firefox

Hallo,

I often use the saved passwords of my Firefox browser to see and sometimes erase the passwords...only everytime I must go to Tools - Options - Safety - saved password.
I was arguing if there is a way to insert a link in the toolbar to simplify and speed up this task.

Thank you and hallo to everyone.

iPhone's new Siri vs. Vlingo Plus for BlackBerry?

The free app from RIM I'm most eagerly awaiting to try out is Vlingo Plus, normally $19.99.

The description sounds a lot like the Siri ads, saying in part:
Quote:
Try saying "Text John; What's up?" or "find italian restaurants" or even "update Facebook; I'm on a boat!"
And they post a review snippet from the Wall Street Journal - who generally aren't impressed with "techie cool" stuff, just things that really work:
Quote:
?Vlingo will do whatever you've told it to do? - Wall Street Journal
Has anyone used Vlingo or Siri - or preferably both and can comment on how good or bad Vlingo is and how it compares to Siri?

BB vs. iPhone4 - Can the iPhone do these things?

I'm considering switching to it, but I've been with my BB for almost 4 years now, and love so many things about it, wondering how the iPhone would stack up vs. a Bold 9700 let's say, which I assume will do things just like my current BB Pearl.

I'm in the office pretty much all the time, so don't need to type a lot of emails, which I know the keyboard on the BB would be better for. I'm mainly reading emails the occasional time when I'm away from desk and out of office. I won't need to have my work emails synchronized with Outlook at work either.

What about these things? How does the iPhone handle them?

1. Separate icons per email address on your desktop, so you can decide if you want to only check certain ones (I avoid reading my work emails after hours
2. Sync Outlook contacts and auto sync calendar upon receipt of email
3. Different commands for when in and out of holster, for each email address, and for different things (like for phone, text msg, etc.) You can set it up to vibrate x times for example when in holster when phone rings, but not to vibrate at all if out of it. Set which email address to flash the led, and which ones not to.
4. Silence ringer by pushing volume key easily
5. Backups easy
6. Voice dialing
7. MP3 as ringer. Different ringer per person.
8. Marking emails as opened. I really like this, because when I'm in the office, I occasionally mark all as opened, and then it's easy to spot the new ones if I leave the office and can read just those.
9. Call history per number
10. Multi task while on phone, like read and reply to texts, etc.
11. Autotext for typing words (wer gets changed to we're)

Iphone 4 vs. Blackberry

Hi all, I was planning on getting a blackberry, and now the iphone 4 has come out, which is pretty tempting. Im going to be usign my phone for texting and social networking. I wont really need the browser.. mainly apps. I would also feel a lot better if i knew that there was a new bold coming out, because i want to get the most upgraded/up to date version. Let me know about your thoughts, thanks

New Sidekick LX versus the new Curve

I was wondering if any Blackberry users on TMOBILE have a sidekick and if so how it compares to the curve. I own and run my own business and my phone/pda is basically my life. I have been using the curve for 2 years and like everything about it except for the keyboard which I find rather small. Since I am emailing/texting all day it getst tiresome. Im tired of waiting for the storm and saw that TMOBILE is putting out a new smaller, sleeker Sidekick LX. Is this worth a look? or should I just bite the bullet and buy the new Curve?

EDIT: After reading more on this forum my biggest concern is email. I need to get/send emails asap. Seems like thats still a big complaint to the Sidekick.

Thanks in advance

Blackberry 8900 vs Samsung Memoir?

I'm in need of a new phone and now I am wondering which of these two should I get? I have T-Mobile and these two are the most expensive ones so I'm guessing their the best in their class. What are the pros and cons to each one?

Blackberry's space and Apple's space

In truth I feel that Blackberry and Apple have different spaces, and you all know the tool vs. toy argument, business vs. consumer, blah blah blah.

Although between the two, I would say Blackberry has been more aggressive going into Apple's space via the Storm and the general consumer space with the Curves, Pearls and Flips.

Apple's space remains limited to those who deem it acceptable to use a touch screen phone. Apple will never intrude into the hardware QWERTY space without an Iphone that features a fixed qwerty keyboard. But Apple's dogma of conceptual purity will surely prevent such a product. Their strategy is to make the iPhone and even the iPod Touch more and more acceptable to businesses and corporations, and maybe so, through a PDA sort of way. That's squarely aimed at the HP iPaq business.

What happened in the market is that RIM laid waste to the candybar qwerty market. In so doing just blew away Palm's and Motorola's market on qwerty phones. The biggest casualties are Win Mo phones especially. Bolds and Curves just ate up through the Treos, Q9s and Blackjacks. HTC accounts for over 50% of WinMo phones, and only one of them is the bar qwerty type.

What Win Mo lost in market share in the qwerty side is made up in the touchscreen side, especially through the HTC Touch, Diamond and Touch Pros. Other Taiwanese manufacturers like Glo-Fish has a similar pattern. In a way, although Win Mo qwerty phones are still being introduced, like the HTC Snap, much of the Win Mo efforts are directed at the touch screen side and therefore Apple's space. The biggest loser has been Nokia's N-series, whose emphasis in multimedia places them right in the tracks of Apple's train.

One does has to consider how much the hybrid---touch screen with slider qwerty---pose a threat to both spaces. This isn't just in reference to HTC's phones using that factor with Win Mo like the Touch Pro or Moguls, but also mid end phones with proprietary OSes, the spiritual descendants of the Sidekick. This factor isn't going away, and it may become more popular. Nokia has just moved into this space with two models, on the E series and another on the Xpressmusic side. I suspect RIM is looking at this direction, with probably a Storm kind of variant with a pull out keyboard.

I think RIM's future strategy lies on three horns.

1. Increase and maintain dominance of the candybar qwerty market.

2. Increase the beach head on the touch screen market.

3. A response to the hybrid touchscreen with slider qwerty market.

How tempted are you buy the iPhone?

I love my Mac and my iPod but I also love my new BB 8830 which is just one week old. So far I don't find myself all that tempted by the iPhone because the BB handles email so well and VZW to me just has a better network.

I'm just wondering how tempted other Mac/BB users are by the iPhone.

Blackberry 9800 vs. Blackberry 9700/9780 With OS6

Presently I'm using the 9700 with a leaked version of OS6, and the only problem I have is that I cannot access my Bank of America accounts, which I do mostly at home anyway. Aside from that, I love the new browser, the Player For YouTube Pro, which loads and buffers better than my home computer with absolutely no lag. I am now considering the 9800, but given how satisfied I am with the 9700 with the new OS6, I wonder what I am missing out on with the 9800. Anyone here has both the 9700/9780 with OS6 as well as the 9800 for a comparison?

Tmobile upgrading time - 9700 or mytouch slide?

Wife - 8310 unlocked and will almost definitely upgrade to a 9700 in the next month
Me - 8900

We BBM relatively often, I use google maps, facebook, gmail, slingplayer, and only infrequently use internet.

Will the mytouch slide disappoint me?

Is there an instant messenger app that will work to connect the 9700 with the MTslide?

I could get the slide from walmart for $140 with a contract extension, I'm on month 12 of a 2 year contract. Or would that be wicked dumb, because in another year there will be phones that are amazing and way better than current ones?

iphone 3.0 vs storm

Hi all,

I was just reading about apples "updates to the iphone" and it seems as if they are all already on the storm.

No multimedia messaging? No cut and paste and no horizontal view?

While I think the storm needs an update of its own to resolve some bugs, I think it is a solid device..

I dont see how the iphone is superior at all..
even with the app store..it doesnt appear to be superior really in any way..
many feel its the wifi..
honestly, I get 3G almost anywhere I go and its fast enough for me to do what I need..I would likely not evne use wifi and forget it on and drain my battery..

just food for thought...apples updates are all already on the storm

BlackBerry vs. iPhone 4 - enterprise security

iPhone 4, iOS 4 offer deeper enterprise support - Computerworld

Gartner says:
Quote:
Dulaney also referred to a research note that he and another Gartner analyst, John Girard, prepared on May 20 that stated, "Apple continues to make incremental improvements for enterprise support [with iOS 4] and will widen its appeal to third parties and end users."

But those optimistic remarks were followed by this comment: "The iPhone is still not at the level of the BlackBerry at its highest levels of security, or at the level of Microsoft when third-party products complement Windows Mobile. However, Apple's iPhone OS 4 enhancements are a step in the right direction."

question: (idk where 2 put this) anyways

what phone is faster........first of all its not about your perferance about the phone...

is a unlocked 2g and 3g iphone faster then a bb curve 8900????
apps wise and internet wise

Yay!!!! I switch to the iPhone

.....OK, so here it is. About 2 weeks ago my IT guy figured out a great way to push our microsoft exchange email to his iPhone using Outlook Web Access. I was bored with my 8310 but wasn't really wanting a Bold all that much so I bit. I got a black 8g iPhone and this thing rocks. I have my work email and gmail being pushed (faster than to the bb's) and I have all of my email folders on the iPhone along with seamless wireless reconciliation. I am so glad I made the switch. Sorry BB loyalist, the bb just aint what it used to be.

Curve Vs. Treo 700p

I currently own a treo 700p and i think its alright, im rather tech savvy so i have been able to keep it working about 95% of the time but Verizon has jerked me around for the last time. I have heard BBs are more stable than palms and i was looking at the curve specificly. My requirement for a phone would be
  • Good Calendar and ToDo apps
  • String SMS messages together much like an AIM convo
  • Good call quality
  • Be extremely stable
  • Sync with my Mac computer
  • I like email but its not necessary and i know BBs are famous for having good email so thats not a problem

Basically i would like to know how the curve performs mostly in the calendar and todo areas from people who have used it for a while, and preferably those who have also used a treo

Thanks in advance

HTV EVO & Blackberry Bold 9650 - my experience

This is not a "vs." thread as you are used to reading...this is merely my observations since I have owned and used both devices to their fullest extent. I wanted to share these with you guys (as well as blackberryforums.com) to see what you all thought. I get a ton of email each day, a fair amount of texts and use the high side of 5k mins/month. One of the ways that I have always set myself apart is my response times. I am VP of Sales for a small wireless integration firm and used to work for Sprint and Nextel on the data side. My first smartphone was a Blackberry 7510 in 2004. I had access to every device that Nextel and Sprint had and tried 95% of them. I always went back to Blackberry.

In July of this year, my CEO gave me an EVO and I wanted to give it a fair shot. I went into with the same mentality as always - that I would be back to Blackberry in a few days. I was wrong. I immediately began reading XDA-developers on how to root the device and after that, it snowballed. I was CONSTANTLY trying to find new ways to enhance the battery life and customize my device to my liking. I played around with many different ROMS and kernels (CM6, Baked Snack, Myn and a couple others) and had found Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4 with Netarchy 2.1.1 CFS smartass kernel to be the best fit for me. That said, I blew through batteries each day unless I was in my home office had to carry an extra one every where I went. On Friday (12/24), I saw a post on Twitter about OS 6.0 for the 9650 and decided to give it a shot. Here is my comparison based on my usage of both devices.

Screen:

Blackberry: ample size for email and texting. Marginal for video like youtube.
EVO: Gorgeous clarity and perfect for watching videos and looking at pictures.

Battery:

Blackberry: stellar battery life....not only does it hold a charge well it doesn't take long to charge. I carry an extra battery in my bag but I can barely ever remember using it.
EVO: Terrible. I have seen so many posts about how folks are getting x hours of standby or sleep or whatever..point is, it comes down to how long the battery lasts as I use the device. I found myself checking percentage drain after leaving the device on all night after every change I made (kernel, ROM, etc.)....it became rather time consuming if you think about it. Everyone always says, "yeah, but it does so much more?" Well, I got tired of worrying what my battery life was going to do when I turned GPS on to use Navigation. You would have thought that the folks that manufactured these devices would have added a little extra juice.

Size:

Blackberry: nice design...good fit in my hand but keyboard is just a tad small (I wear a XXL golf glove).
EVO: large 4.3" screen great for media but a little big to carry around daily. Until the EVO I was a BB holster guy. Having the EVO on my hip felt like a small TV on my belt. I lost that clip quickly and will never carry ANY device on my hip again.

Keyboard:

Blackberry: quite simply, it is perfect. No device can touch a Blackberry keyboard, IMO. Even other Android devices with sliders are no comparison.
EVO: This was my first time using a touchscreen device for any length of time. I didnt care for stock, tried Swype (eh) and decided that SwiftKey was the best choice for me. I got used to touchscreen with no problem and while I wasnt as fast as I was on my BB, it worked fine.

Email:

Blackberry: again, cosmetics aside, email is great. With Blackberry and BES, you know what you are getting. There is no manual sync just to be sure that all email is there. One downside is the lack of mirrored sync. On activesync, you can delete an email in your inbox and it wont show up anymore on your device. Not so with Blackberry (unless this is a new feature in 6.0). I like how easy it is to reply (letter r), reply all (letter l) and forward (letter f) emails with Blackberry. Attachments are handled ok.
EVO: My company is on Exchange 2003 so no HTML email on the stock android mail app. I bought the Touchdown app and it was just ok. While I liked the HTML email via Touchdown it used a little more battery than the stock app. I like the fact that everything is mirrored (replica of inbox). On more than one occasion I noticed that email would sync only after getting into my inbox. Functionality seemed fine 95% of the time....but not 100%. Another small irritant of mine in Android is the fact that the cc field isn't in view automatically. You actually have to hit a button to put the cc field in and then add your address.

Messaging:

Blackberry: Blackberry messenger is awesome, no doubt. Problem is you are limited to those that use it. Texting on the Blackberry is fine also. In fact, I like it as much as Android because it acts just like the email app.

EVO: Until the EVO, I had very limited interaction with texting. Literally, 90% of anyone I communicated with was on BBM. I tried the stock app, Handcent and then finally ended up with ChompSMS. Texting vs. texting it's a wash on both devices.

Browsing:

Blackberry: browsing has gotten a bit better with 6.0 but it doesn't compare to the EVO. It gets the job done but it's just ok.

EVO: I love browsing the web on the EVO. I like the auto text resize capabilities of the stock browser and the overall experience is much better.

Calendar

Blackberry: Never had an issue with the calendar on a Blackberry.
EVO: I can count 8-10 specific events that just didn't show up on my calendar on my EVO...All from Exchange and all events were in Outlook. I need to know this will work 100% of the time. Period.

Contacts

Blackberry: KIS -Keep is simple is exactly what they do. Never an issue with contacts. Always integrated nicely with the other aspects of Blackberry. In 6.0 you can see all conversations/activities within each contact.
EVO: The "people" app on the EVO was ok. When I first got the EVO, everything wanted to integrate with more than one source....it listed Google, PC, Exchange......and I only wanted Exchange....again, never felt 100%.

Apps:

Blackberry: App store is just ok...nothing great to mention here.

EVO: Android market is awesome....lots of great choices for the many things that can be done with Android.

UI
Blackberry: Simple and non-descript. 6.0 adds a good amount to it but it isn't on par with Android.
EVO: I love the time and weather widgets on the home screen. I definitely miss that on Blackberry.

Social Media:

I manage my company's Twitter account as well as our Facebook account (along with my personal accounts of each). I simply love TweetDeck for Android. With Blackberry, I haven't found a combined app that functions anywhere close. I tried HootSuite but it wasn't a combined app...I had to go into Facebook and then into Twitter. (if anyone has a recommendation here, by all means speak up).

Security

Blackberry: No contest here. If I left my Blackberry in a cab, I would not be concerned at all knowing that I could call my IT dept and have it shut down immediately.
EVO: Not so much. I know there are IT policies that can be implemented and it's "pretty" secure. I am not the IT department BUT I just don't feel as secure knowing that it isn't a BES.

Miscellaneous:

I think it's only a matter of time before Blackberry puts a much better camera in their devices. That is a big part of my satisfaction with the EVO. I am a huge amateur photographer and take pictures virtually everywhere I go. Earlier today as was driving my father in-law's 4-wheeler in the snowstorm pulling my 5 and 8 year old girls on saucers I pulled out my Blackberry and could easily turn around and snap a few shots as i was driving. Safe? probably not but I couldn't have done that as easily (if at all) with the EVO. Another thing I noticed was the ability to dial numbers from websites and calendar invites. On Blackberry, it just works. On the EVO, it was hit or miss.

Overall, the EVO is a great device. I travel a fair amount so having a device like that that could entertain me on a plane was a great draw. I loved Angry Birds, Kindle app and a few more. Problem was I would use all of that and then land and not have any juice to actually work. One of the biggest irritants of the EVO was having to hit the power button on the top to turn the device on. Sounds petty, but that bugged me.

Last week, I ordered an iPad with some Marriott points and I have a feeling that it will serve as more than enough entertainment on planes (hasn't arrived yet). I switched back to my 9650 this past Friday and because of the nature of my business I just think that Blackberry is the better device for me.

I will leave you with one stat that I pulled directly from Xobni (those not familiar with this app for Outlook, you should definitely check it out). It's a great organizer for email within Outlook but also has some analytics that will boggle your mind. It may sound petty but from the first of the year until the day I switched to my EVO my average response time was less than 3 minutes for email. From the day I switched to the EVO until this past Friday my average response time was just under 6 mins....

Ultimately, there isn't one perfect device (in my opinion). For me and right now, it appears that a Blackberry will better serve my needs from a business perspective. Thanks for everyone's assistance on this and other Android forums....you all have been great....Happy New Year!

i havent used the older ones, but out of everything i have used, i would say the pearl is the worst one. the keyboard was a setback and it was kinda slow, but some people like things to be more compact. anyways, what do u think?

BB vs Q

I have the original Q and have not problems with it. However, everyone I know says to get a BB that I would love it. With the Q I am able to connect it to my laptop and use it as a modem when I need to and it does not cost any more. Can I do that with a BB? Why would I want BB over the Q? I really don't know the main differences. Funny thing is when I go in to Sprint and ask them the differences, they say it is pretty much personal preference. LOL Lots of help there.
